Earthquakes For many years, Australians have thought themselves in a low-risk earthquake area. However the Newcastle earthquake of December 28 1989 shattered the myth. The Newcastle earthquake measured 5.6 on the Richter scale, and resulted in 12 deaths.
The Australian Seismological Centre estimates that Australia experiences this type of earthquake about every 10 months, but luckily they usually occur in low population areas.
